When you make a decision, you usually only realize its importance a long time after it’s been made. It’s too bad really, because life isn’t about where you’re going, it’s about what happens while getting there. At the end of the journey, what you really remember isn’t the picture of you on top of some mountain on Instagram. What you remember are the friends you made, the things you saw, all of the experiences you had that changed the person you were before into the person you are now. Unfortunately, there is no sign big enough to tell you about these things. When I started thinking about college, I didn’t know where or even if I wanted to go to university. And I definitely didn't have a clue how to apply to one. I was very interested in natural sciences, but I always thought that you had to be in business to make money. In addition, I was nationally ranked in cross-country skiing, and I wasn't ready to give up my passion yet. I had ambitious dreams that I wanted to go after. And that is when I met Dr. Schmitt. The first time I saw Dr. Schmitt, I was very nervous. More, I was terrified, and rightfully so: we were going to talk about my future! But to my surprise, we didn’t talk. All that Dr. Schmitt did was listen. Then we met again, and this time, he talked, and I listened. And what I remember as particularly striking, was that instead of telling me where I should go, Dr. Schmitt told me where I COULD go. I was immediately much more excited about going to college. Dr. Schmitt helped me see that going to college isn’t an obligation, it’s a choice. There are too many obligations in school, and too few choices; too much duty, not enough freedom. And when I went to the University of Colorado at Boulder, the choice was mine entirely. I was going where I wanted to go, not where I was told to go. Not only did Dr. Schmitt tell me about the opportunities that were open to me, but he also gave me a feel for what it would be like being there. Every time we would talk about a certain place, Dr. Schmitt told me all he knew about it: the dorm life, the strong areas of research, the students he knew who went there. Those are things that you can’t find on the internet, but these things told me more than any university website ever could. In my time at the University of Colorado, I have got to do research in the nation’s best (tie with MIT) facility for Atomic Molecular Optical Physics. The CU Ski Team won two NCAA Championships (btw, I still have one season to go!). And I took part in the Davos 2014 World Cup. I could barely dream of achieving one of these goals a few years ago. But when I look back, those are not the things I see. What I see are the detours I had to take, the new faces I got to learn. And most importantly, I see the choices which led me to where I am now. And talking to Dr. Curt Schmitt, well, that definitely was the right choice.

Going through the application process at elite business schools is a lonely and daunting task. If you’re lucky, you have Dr. Schmitt by your side who will give you expert advice on virtually every aspect of the process. Whether you need to understand the real-life differences between various MBA programs (vs. the marketing blur on their website), go through the 10th iteration of your application essays - yes, it does make a difference - or simply have a trusted advisor who can support you in dark moments as well as push you towards the finishing line: Dr. Schmitt was the man. I shall forever be grateful to him for helping me learn everything about business in two of the most rigorous and stimulating academic environments on both sides of the Atlantic.

Thanks to its international experience and expertise UNITARGET helped me to find the perfect match. Dr. Schmitt narrowed down the search in terms of academia, without losing sight of my personal preferences. It was an important and essential support, which guided me along the whole way to the University of Miami, the ideal place for me. I am extremely happy with my decision and I could not feel better at any other university.

Dr. Schmitt gave me a detailed and thorough introduction to universities all over the world. As college counsellor his advice was crucial and helped me to be aware of the differences between the many majors and minors, understand the long list of admission criteria and successfully navigate the application process. I just completed my Bachelor of Science in California. Thank you, Dr. Schmitt!

Having previously only studied in Europe, navigating the landscape of US universities and colleges seemed like a daunting task since the curricula and application procedures varied so greatly. Dr. Schmitt was very helpful in walking me through the application process, from the college essays to preparing for the standardized tests - and broke down an otherwise intimidating process into clear, simple steps with precise deadlines. Particularly in applying to US institutions, where the essays play an integral role in the decision process - it is invaluable to have advice from someone who knows what language and achievements the admissions board is looking for. As an added bonus, I did end up getting accepted to my school of choice, NYU, where I recently received my bachelor's degree in communications. Dr. Schmitt was a pleasure to work with and I would absolutely recommend him to any student beginning their application process.

I absolutely love my course and probably wouldn't have found it without Dr. Schmitt’s help – let alone get into LSE without his support.
